Local Academy Councillors
The Local Academy Council (LAC) is deeply committed to the success of the school and dedicated to ensuring that every student receives the highest quality education, along with the opportunities and experiences necessary to reach their full potential. Our Councillors play a crucial role in overseeing the school's operations, serving as "critical friends" to school leaders, and holding the school accountable for its performance and continuous development.
The LAC has an important role in acting as the eyes and ears for the Trust Board providing important community oversight at a local level of the school’s performance, vision and ethos. As a local academy councillor, you will not be involved with the day-to-day running of the school. Councillors normally attend meetings in the evening, read and comment on reports and visit the schools termly to see first-hand the impact of their work.

Hazel Nicholson - Chair of the Local Academy Council
“I first became involved in school governance, when I led a team of Civil Servants (many school governors themselves) in a project to encourage more civil servants to get involved in school governing. Inspired by their passion for the role, I signed up to volunteer. As a full-time working Mum, time is precious, so I wanted to make sure I dedicated the spare time I had to a school who wasn’t ‘Outstanding’ but on an improvement journey and would welcome fresh challenge and ideas, somewhere I would feel like I was making a difference so I was delighted when I was approached by Wellfield to come and join their board of governors. When the school became an Academy, we joined Endeavour Learning Trust and the governing board became a Local Academy Council (LAC).
There are a number of opportunities to be part of in this role; school visits to observe first-hand the progress to school is making and to feedback some of the strengths and areas for further development, attend disciplinary hearings to ensure sanctions are in line with behaviour policy, and attend termly meetings as a LAC with the head teacher to discuss school performance and provide supportive check and challenge. When we joined Endeavour learning Trust, we became an Academy and at that point, I became chair of the LAC and took on new responsibilities and challenges. I have been in the role for 7 years now and still get so much from it personally and still feel like I am making a difference”.
