SMSC
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
SMSC is a key part of Personal Development at Wellfield Academy. We promote students spiritual, moral, social and cultural development across the curriculum and school life. We support students to be responsible, respectful, and active citizens who contribute positively to society. We prepare students for life in modern Britain, including the fundamental British Values. We develop understanding and appreciation of diversity and equality and encourage respect for different cultures, faiths, and beliefs.
Spiritual Development is developed by allowing students to reflect on beliefs, values, and experiences. Students are encouraged to develop a sense of identity, purpose, and self-worth. Opportunity is given to explore the meaning and purpose of life. We foster a culture in which students enjoy learning about themselves and others.
Moral Development encourages our students to recognise right from wrong and apply it in their lives. Students are continuously developing an understanding of consequences of behaviour. We encourage students to show interest in moral and ethical issues and enable them to engage in discussion about moral dilemmas.
Social skills are used in different contexts. Students work and socialise with others, including those from different backgrounds. Participation in the local community is encouraged and students understand how societies function.
To develop students Culturally we encourage students to appreciate cultural influences on their lives and others, we support them to understand and value a range of cultures, we expect them to show respect for cultural diversity. We develop understanding of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system.
SMSC Delivery
SMSC is delivered in PHSCE lessons through the weekly curriculum. It is further enhanced through the curriculum and enriched curriculum and wider school life. All staff are aware of and promote SMSC actively. SMSC is developed whilst delivering other areas of Personal Development, specifically RSE, British values, mental health education, and CEIAG.
